Gypsy Rose Blanchard Announces Pregnancy: From Prison to Parenthood

Gypsy Rose Blanchard

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, known for her involvement in the tragic case of her mother’s murder, has announced that she is expecting a baby. This significant news comes just over a year after her release from a Missouri prison. Blanchard shared that her baby is due in January, expressing her deep desire to provide her child with the loving and supportive upbringing she felt deprived of.

A Desire to Be a Nurturing Mother

In a heartfelt YouTube video, Blanchard revealed her aspirations of becoming a nurturing mother. “I just want to be a good mother for my child,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “I want to be everything my mother wasn’t.”

A Story of Abuse and Manipulation

Blanchard’s story captured national attention after it was revealed that her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, had subjected her to years of abuse, forcing her to fake severe illnesses. Dee Dee’s actions included confining Gypsy to a wheelchair and feeding tube, under the pretense of serious medical conditions. Dee Dee manipulated doctors and even secured charitable donations, including a home from Habitat for Humanity, by claiming that Gypsy’s medical records had been lost in Hurricane Katrina. Gypsy’s attorney later disclosed that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychological disorder where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in someone under their care to gain sympathy and attention.

Orchestrating a Tragic End

At 23, Gypsy orchestrated the murder of her mother, supplying a knife to her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, who carried out the killing while she hid in the bathroom. The two fled to Wisconsin, where they were arrested. Godejohn received a life sentence, while Gypsy was given a reduced sentence due to the abuse she had endured. Following her release, Gypsy has worked to forgive both her mother and herself, as she discussed in the Lifetime docuseries “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard” and her e-book “Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom.” Her story has also been featured in the HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and the Hulu miniseries “The Act.”

Embracing Motherhood

Despite concerns from some who think she isn’t ready for motherhood, Gypsy remains optimistic. “It’s an amazing feeling when your whole world shifts and suddenly it’s not about you,” she explained. “It’s about this tiny little life inside you that you are now in charge of protecting. And that little tiny life is a baby, a little human that’s yours, and you have to make sure you protect, love, and take care of them. All of the things I wish I could have had when I was little.”

Rekindling Relationships and Building a Family

The baby’s father is Ken Urker, a former prison pen pal who had proposed to Gypsy during her incarceration. Although they had separated and she briefly married Ryan Scott Anderson, a special education teacher from Louisiana, Gypsy and Urker have since rekindled their relationship. Despite the pregnancy being unplanned, both are excited and dedicated to creating a loving family.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Gypsy said, acknowledging the unconventional nature of her life and relationships. “Everything that has ever happened to me led me to be who I am today and brought me to this moment right here, right now. And that’s a blessing.”
